Not only did the festivities draw crowds to take in HIP's vision for the former Southworks Factory Outlet Mall as a place to live, work and play, it set a new sales record for Waterloo Region.

Gaslight District first spot in region to get ‘creative intersection’ installation

CAMBRIDGE — Hip Developments has earmarked $2 million for a creative installation at its Gaslight District project in Cambridge.

"We wanted to make sure it had enough funding to do something truly amazing," Scott Higgins, president of Hip, said Wednesday.

This will be the first "creative intersection" in the region under an initiative led by the Prosperity Council of Waterloo Region.

The Creative Intersections Strategy is focused on erecting permanent installations at key intersections in public spaces across the region.

Southworks closes, work on Gaslight District begins

The deal by HIP Developments to buy the Southworks Outlet Mall is done and the work now begins on one of the largest redevelopment projects in Cambridge in recent years.

“The deal closed June 30 and all of the existing tenants have moved out and the mall is now closed,” said HIP Development’s president Scott Higgins, Tuesday (July 4).

Some of the Southworks’ tenants have found new homes in the Galt core area according to Higgins.

“Which is really good for everyone. I know Southworks Antiques has found space at 73 Water St. in Cambridge Place,” he said.

Electrical Utility Will Call Gaslight District Home

CAMBRIDGE — The Gaslight District is getting a jolt of electricity.

The head office of Energy+, the hydro utility serving customers in Cambridge, North Dumfries and Brant County, will move into the mixed-use development that's planned for the historic Southworks and Tiger Brand properties in Galt in early 2020.

CAMBRIDGE — Energy+, Cambridge’s electrical distribution company, is getting back to its roots in downtown Galt.

Utility officials announced they have found a new home, following a two-year search, and now plan to set up shop in HIP Development’s $120-million "Gaslight District" project.

Energy+ will be making roughly 20,000 square feet of the former Southworks building off Fraser Street its new administrative headquarters in 2020, bringing more than 70 jobs to the west Galt location.
